Constantinople Silverplated 17" Serving Tray by Ercuis

For 93 years after setting off on its maiden voyage from Paris to Constantinople on 4 October 1883, the Orient Express never ceased to fire the collective imagination. It was internationally famous as the backdrop for historic events, and for the celebrities who traveled on it. Well-known books and films have commemorated the luxury, romanticism, adventure, and uniqueness that still characterize the Orient Express today.

When James B. Sherwood undertook the revival of the Venice Simplon Orient-Express in 1977, he wished to restore the train’s décor to its superb original condition. He entrusted Gérard Gallet with the interior decoration to reflect the spirit of luxury and distinction of the roaring twenties. Ercuis was asked to design an original range of tableware engraved with the initials VSOE. Today, in agreement with VSOE, Ercuis has made selected pieces from a tea and coffee service available to its clients so that they too may sample the fabulous world evoked by the Orient Express.

Ercuis was founded in 1867 by Adrien Celeste Pillon, a priest from Ercuis in the French department of Oise, north of Paris. In 1880 Ercuis opened their first shop in Paris. Simultaneously they moved away from religious works and towards decorative and artistic flatware and hollowware, which they became renowned for. With evolving styles and trends Ercuis made a transition to more modern styles in 1969, introducing sleek designs to their expert level craftsmanship. Ercuis became an exclusive luxury French brand in 1978. Their products can be seen in multiple luxury hotels in Paris and in parts of northern and southern France including the Royal Monceau Raffles, the Shangri-La Hotel, and the Four Seasons George V. The growing luxury hotel industry on the international and local scale has secured Ercuis as a leading name in the world of luxury.
