Designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936 for Karhula, the original form for this item was based on a woman's dress and formed by the traditional manner of blowing glass into a wet wooden mold.

The vase became known as the Savoy vase due to it being included in a project for the Savoy restaurant in Helsinki. It also was included in the Paris Exhibition that same year.

This choice of plywood for production of these low bowls or platters stems from a long tradition of Aalto furniture.  Each plywood bowl is unique on its surface pattern. Lacquer has been applied to give a smooth, glossy finish. Damp wipe only.  Will patina over time.
