Cicanel Stoneware Vase by Claude Conover c. 1970
Claude Conover (1907-1994) was born in Pittsburgh and educated at the Cleveland School of Art, where he studied painting. Conover was an industrial designer until late in life, when he began to devote his life to making ceramics.
Conover specialized in hand built stoneware forms, often with applied (rolled) decor which he designed himself. Although his art was well known within ceramic circles, his work is just coming to the forefront of the American experience, with a major well-received auction of works at Wright in October 2021. Conover 'named' his ceramics after Mayan words.
His works are striking in a domestic setting, placing emphasis on form, volume, and symmetry.
Cicanel is a striking bulbous work measuring 15". It is in excellent condition and contains an insert for holding flowers.

Conover’s works are in private collections around the world as well as in museums across the country, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
