Ayno 125.5" Steel Floor Lamps Designed by Stefan Diez for Midgard

Winner of the German sustainability award in design 2021, the Ayno series features minimalistic construction enabling extremely low resource consumption during production. The first design of Midgard since the 1950s, Ayno is testing the boundaries between the origin and status quo of adjustable lighting.

The central feature of the Ayno series is a fiberglass rod, which is stretched to the bow by the luminaire cable. The inherent tension of the rod allows a lamp without any joints. By sliding the two adjustment rings at the top and bottom, the fiberglass rod is bent into the desired position and the light is directed where needed. The cable tightens the rod into an arc, of which the radius can be varied as required using the adjustment rings. Fine adjustments are done with the swiveling lampshade.

Stefan Diez

Stefan Diez was from a family of carpenters which let Diez to develop an early bond with craftsmanship that profoundly shaped his development as an industrial designer. Following family tradition, he trained as a cabinetmaker before studying industrial design under Richard Sapper at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart. Working with Konstantin Grcic for several years, Stefan founded DIEZ OFFICE in Munich after graduating in 2002.

From 2007 onwards Stefan was Professor for Industrial Design at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe, joining the School of Industrial Design Lund, Sweden, in 2015. Since 2018 Stefan Diez is Head of Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

In 2008, DIEZ OFFICE fundamentally renovated and moved into the premises of a former joinery, the ideal platform for Diez’s distinct combination of hands-on experimentation and technical know-how. Together with his team, Stefan Diez is focusing in particular on the potential of the circular economy and is developing everyday products whose components can be easily returned back into the material cycle. This approach has led to the creation of award-winning furniture, luminaires, and accessories, in collaboration with internationally renowned manufacturers like Rosenthal, Thonet, Wilkhahn, HAY, e15, Magis, Vibia, Viccarbe, Wagner, Midgard, and more.

Midgard was founded in 1919 by the engineer Curt Fischer, a lamp manufacturer who is producing in Germany to date. Midgard constructed the first articulated ‚Äústeering lamps,‚ÄĚ a true innovation at the beginning of the 20th century, electing Curt Fischer as the inventor of tractable light by many. With his products, Fischer was a supplier of the Bauhaus, where Midgard lamps could be found at the desks of Gropius, Wagenfeld, Brandt, Stoelzl as well as in the Bauhaus apartments.

In 2015 David Einsiedler and Joke Rasch took over the company from the third generation of the Fischers and led it back to production in Hamburg after restructuring. To date, Midgard produces three lamp ranges: the Midgard Modular System, the Spring-loaded Lamp, and K831, all made in Germany and with the use of original tools.
