Lions have represented the House of Wittelsbach since 1242. Representing courage and valor, many of the lions wield the shield of blue and white oblique diamonds. The shield also dates back to the same period but evolved to its current appearance in 1950.
This particular version was designed by Ernst Andreas Rauch in 1948.
