Metamorphosis is a transformation of one form into another. Metamorphosis that discovers an identity within an absurd Kafka manuscript. This collection explores pattern, shape, texture, and color to create an evolution taking inspiration from a story by Franz Kafka. This collection morphed from the original materials and through Ruckl's creation process has been transformed into the works that make up this collection.
Born in what we now call the Czech Republic in 1883, Franz Kafka was a Jewish German-language writer of visionary fiction whose works, especially the story Die Verwandlung (1915; The Metamorphosis), express the anxieties and alienation felt by many in 20th-century Europe and North America. The Metamorphosis is a story about a man who wakes up as a giant insect and is forced into hiding by their father, leading to the neglect, guilt, and eventual death of the insect man.
Kafka’s family life, social practices, and political views led him to feel isolated leading to a life full of discontent and suppressed feelings and beliefs. Before devoting his life to writing Kafka lived a double life as a lawyer by day, and a writer by night. Long days in law and long nights writing led Kafka to not focus on his health, which ultimately was his downfall. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1917 forcing him to take sick leaves, and ultimately retiring in 1922. Feeling alone and trapped he moved to Berlin to pursue writing in 1923. Finally being able to live how he had longed to, he met a woman who shared similarities he had long suppressed. A year after he moved to Berlin he died from tuberculosis.

Rony Plesl
Rony Plesl is a designer and a sculptor. During his career, he has experimented with several forms of fine arts using glass and other materials. His works include sculptures, individual works of applied arts, decorative items, as well as industrially produced glassware. Plesl combines a wide range of various influences and principles, intertwined and mingled in numerous forms of his artwork. His love for Italy and history of art go hand in glove with his interest in glass as a material, its structure, visual qualities, and epic stories enshrined therein.
Ruckl, located in the Czech Republic, was founded in 1846. Czech glass has been known for its artistic and often daring approach to the medium for centuries.
