In a richly expressive phase defined by naturalism, Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro unveiled an extraordinary collection of ceramic works inspired by the bounty of the sea. A devoted epicurean, he delighted in refined gatherings, sharing exquisite meals with close companions at Lisbon’s celebrated Leão de Ouro brasserie and within the distinguished circle of the Grupo dos Macavencos at Palácio Foz. His time in Caldas da Rainha was equally indulgent, often spent in the company of Francisco Grandela at his residence in Foz do Arelho, enveloped by sweeping coastal beauty.

From this world of culinary pleasure and maritime inspiration emerged an opulent array of forms—sardines, eels, crabs, lobsters, bivalves, and an abundant variety of fish—seemingly spilling across panniers, grand platters, baskets, vessels, and vases. Each piece was adorned with intricately rendered nets and fishing floats, composing a dramatic and immersive seafaring tableau. The result is a masterful interplay of sculpture and storytelling, brought vividly to life through remarkably precise and sumptuous coloration.

Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, one of the most influential people of nineteenth century Portuguese culture, will forever be intimately associated with caricature and artistic ceramics. In 1884, Bordallo began his ceramics production at the Fábrica de Faianças, revealing pieces of great technical, artistic and creative quality. Adopting a modern and entrepreneurial approach, Bordallo Pinheiro plays an essential role in the revitalization of Portuguese ceramics and of the artistic heritage of its factory. Bordallo Pinheiro remains faithful to tradition through the use of ancestral manufacture techniques and the naturalistic motifs at the root of the brand. These decorative pieces continue to feed our collective imagination and to take the prestige of Portuguese culture and industry one step further.
